CANDACE CHAITE
Candace Chaite began her dot paintings in 1972.
She moved from Lower Manhattan to rural New Mexico in 1995.
She teaches Tai Chi.
Chaite's paintings rarely exceed 12x12 inches.
They emit light, shimmering like weather events.
Closer, the dots emerge.
Each dot is a minuscule volume of concentration,
having a clear and present identity,
differing from neighbors in color, shape, size, weight.
Equidistantly spaced, the dots move and shift together
in a maze of choreographed lines circles curves characters
forming an ever changing dance of luminescence.
It is logical to suggest that
Candace Chaite aligns with
Agnes Martin and Agnes Pelton
all navigating from New York to the Southwest
all cultivating a life of spiritual tranquility
all translating their vision with the greatest of simplicity.
The artist sees her paintings as visual catalysts
"to gaze at the very motility of mind."
Chaite has exhibited sparingly in New York, Los Angeles, New Mexico, and Europe.
